Cover Art

One of the upsides of being with a small press is that authors have much more say in their cover art. So, please let me know--do you judge a book by its cover?  And if so, what makes you go, "I gotta buy that one!"

I'm a bit biased, but I like this one:

Nominations, anyone? Which one(s) speak to you?

I like simple covers where there's not a whole lot going on, but you get a sense of something deeper.

Some of my favorites are HUSH, HUSH, PARANORMALCY, and MATCHED.

Covers are so subjective! And now there's the whole ebook covers vs. print cover issue. What might make an excellent print cover, for bookstore sales, may not be right for ebook sales! Aaargh!

For the longest time I didn't pick up Vampire Academy and The Mortal Instruments series because I thought the covers looks corny. BIG MISTAKE. Shame on me.

I love the Hush Hush Cover. I also love the Half Blood cover too. Sort of reminds me of The Body Finder with the flower but it looks more intense. The covers of Vixen, Wither and Delirium are super pretty. White Cat is one of my fav covers. I'm dying to read Across The Universe. The cover on that one is suuuuuper pretty.

I guess I like covers sort of simple. Not too corny or romance novelly but I also tend to like seeing models on the cover (with uncomplicated backgrounds) or at least something I can easily recognize (like a flower). I keep hearing awesome things about a book called Divergent but the cover is throwing me off.

for some reason i shy away from covers that have people on them. like a vast majority of SF covers, or romance or something like that. i like more abstract covers. or simple ones. like shiver, or half-blood, or wildefire.

i'm weird.

I don't know if I have a specific look I like for a cover. I have learned since I started blogging that you really can't judge a book by it's cover. Generally, I will give just about any book a chance, no matter what the cover looks like. I've been very pleasantly surprised by some contemporary books lately that I normally wouldn't have picked up.

I will say though, that I did buy Shadowspell by Jenna Black this past week just because I loved the cover. I haven't even read the first book in that series BUT I do own it. Now at least I won't have to wait to read the second one after I finish the first one.
