I don't think there's ever a "line" for appropriate content. I think we should give kids what they need. Period.
I suffered from serious depression growing up and my release was in books. I escaped in fanciful worlds of pretty fairies and noble elves. I chose to find the happier novels, but I see how many young adults need and crave the darker themes to take away their feelings of utter loneliness. In fact, I read those "darker" novels now because they're a part of my therapy now, too. I like that I have the option to read to escape or read to be grounded in reality.
I don't think we should ever put a line over that. And I'm glad so many people are speaking up.
